Mara Lynn Keller: A Legacy of Scholarship, Spirituality, and Transformation

Mara Lynn Keller

Dr. Mara Lynn Keller was a pioneering scholar, teacher, and visionary whose life’s work helped shape the field of Women’s Spirituality studies as we know it today. As a philosopher, theologian, and scholar-practitioner, she dedicated her career to exploring the sacred dimensions of women’s lives and to advancing a more inclusive, embodied understanding of spirituality.

Dr. Keller co-founded the Women’s Spirituality program at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), where she also served as Professor of Philosophy and Religion and later as Director of the Women’s Spirituality M.A. and Ph.D. programs. Over the course of her distinguished academic career, she mentored generations of students and scholars, helping to establish women’s spirituality as a rigorous and transformative field of study.

Her work was deeply interdisciplinary, drawing from philosophy, theology, feminist theory, mythology, and ritual studies. She is especially known for her scholarship on ancient goddess traditions, including the spiritual and cultural significance of the Eleusinian Mysteries and the sacred arts of Crete and Greece. At the heart of her work was a commitment to understanding spirituality not only as an intellectual pursuit, but as a lived, embodied experience.

Dr. Keller’s vision extended beyond academia. She was a passionate advocate for dialogue across traditions, seeking to bridge divides and foster mutual understanding between different spiritual communities. Her work emphasized the integration of body, mind, and spirit, reflecting her belief that true knowledge emerges through both inquiry and experience.

Throughout her life, she remained deeply committed to social justice, particularly in advancing the recognition of women’s spiritual voices and the legitimacy of diverse spiritual paths. She viewed the study and practice of women’s spirituality as essential not only for scholarship, but for cultural transformation and healing.

In her final years, Dr. Keller continued her work with remarkable dedication, completing multiple book projects that brought together decades of research, teaching, and spiritual insight. Her lifelong contributions reflect a profound commitment to both intellectual rigor and spiritual depth.

The founding of Women’s Spirituality Studies Press was one of her final visionary acts; an extension of her life’s mission to ensure that the voices, scholarship, and wisdom within this field would continue to be shared, preserved, and expanded for future generations.

Today, her legacy lives on through the work of WSSP and the global community of scholars, practitioners, and seekers she helped to inspire. Her influence continues to shape the field, inviting us to explore spirituality as a path of inquiry, connection, and transformation.
